dear Kala cat

Kala cat is aging by the minute.

She sleeps,  she wheezes, she eats and she purrs. She no longer grooms herself so she has a pretty radical haircut over her haunches. We snuggle her lots.

She is a sweetheart.

Kizmet

a dear demented little shi spun his way into our life a couple of years ago ... we optimistically hoped his issues might be behavioural in nature but it was not to be. Lesions had attached themselves to Kizmet's brain and fogged his mind substantially.  The wonderful Dr Au came up with a bit of a wait and see plan for him. After 2 weeks Kiz could move in a straight line unless he was excited (then the spinning re-emerged). He was no longer always growling when picked up (he was so confused he would both wag his tail and growl and air snap) and he was eating. The last two years were fairly stable. He slept, a lot, and pottered around. He loved his meals and we loved him.
The last couple of weeks the fog seemed to get denser ... he wouldn't always see us, he couldn't always stop himself spinning and he started growling again.
It was hard to do but I feel a deep responsibility to our palliative foster friends not to let them suffer. And Kizmet was approaching suffering. And that sucked.
His death was peaceful and immediate-nearly as soon as the first drip of euthanol touched his vein he was gone. Another good friend will be waiting for us at the Rainbow Bridge.

buddy beagle baby

not the greatest picture but he may just be the cutest puppy ever! This little soul is bouncing around foster homes hoping for a home of his own ... he has tested positive for parvo so needs to be away from other dogs for awhile .. but he is feeling FABULOUS!

like many of his breed what he really wants is cuddles, food and great things to smell ...

just a dear little fellow

kiddens getting along ...

geesh Ali is a nice little girl - super shy but so willing to take a little one under her arm ... she is wrestling and snuggling with Louie ..

Louie has yet to hiss at us and he no longer freezes in place but he is not purring nor does he seek attention yet ...

they are awfully cute shy babies tho!

Weirdo ...Edwardo ...Louie ...

One little kitten with a whole lot of names has taken up the emergency extra foster spot in the house. (we will not mention anything about guinea pigs OK?)

Edwardo is a mutation of Weirdo - Louie is for Louie Riel .. as this kitten looks a lot like our Dumont  ... (Dumont the human travelled with Riel the human).

Mighty cute he's currently getting used to the idea that dogs and people aren't monsters. He seems to be getting it. Ali is THRILLED to have a kitten to play with and snuggle again so hopefully we'll have some cute pictures soon.

Sometimes it just sucks ...

Little Lizzie died last night

She had moved onto lapping from dish and had just started  eating canned food well too - she was bright, playful and happy

then yesterday she sneezed after lunch

by midnight she was gone - her breathing was laboured and she was suddenly very congested

I could have raced to emerg and left her in an oxygen tank overnight and hoped she survived for awhile but to be honest, having done it before, I had little faith that she could or would survive. I simply could not leave her to die alone and afraid. This way she faded slowly and peacefully with Ali and I. It was sad, no it was tragic, but Lizzie was never afraid nor was she ever cold. She mostly slept and when she woke up she would nestle in against Ali or I.

We will miss her.

Maybe just the cutest thing ever ....

Ali cat has a new friend (and a healed nose)
Little Lizzie is only about 20 days old and a very very sad orphan

|She had a couple of scary days - and she may again
but for right now she's a pretty happy little baby
all curled up with her babysitter!

For a non nursing cat Ali is amazingly tolerant
and provides a good source of heat for the baby too!

and She's Off....

48 more hours to love Quiz then she's off to her forever home

a long long time spent loving this little one ... she's had a good start to life and is just the nicest puppy so I'm optimistic all will be right in her world .. and I certainly trust that she'll come back if she isn't a good fit

Quiz ...

Will she stay or will she go? If she stays there will be trouble ...

thanks for another great photo J.Au - you rock!
meet our newest foster monster - actually she's darling and oh SO good :)
Puppies are great fun to foster but TONS of work ... and always so tempting to fail at fostering ...

Blast from the past ...

Yup - he's a parrot. A large, character filled. badly injured* parrot. We named him Conrad. We loved him and rehabbed him for 2 years and then he found his forever home. Nobody said fostering is easy. (Finding old pictures is fun mind you!)
*Conrad had been living in HELL when he was sent to live with us. He had self mutilated a fist sized hole in his chest. He has made every bird since him seem easy - fully feathered or not.

Some days ...

Are good days ... today I was busy at work in the am and busy with animals in the late afternoon/evening. Pulled 4 mice, a hamster, 3 kittens in one group, 2 kittens in another group and a lovely adult Siamese from the shelter this week. The hamster and mice are in homes. Seems quite sure the Siamese (and Delilah) as well as at least 3 of the kittens will be in homes by the end of tomorrow. An amazing day's work. (Add a Spaniel puppy leaving Monday, and a long haired chihuahua leaving tomorrow (cross your fingers) and it's been an incredible week already. I would be hard pressed to tell you the last time Project Jessie had more than 10 adoptions in one week let alone the last time I facilitated many of them. (Though I suspect it would be the All About Pets Show in March of 2007 or 2008) This is our newest Simple Soul. A flame point Balinese he is about 3 months old and just as cute as can be. He is impaired but it's a pretty mild impairment so I'm hoping he will grow into himself and be able to find a home. He is very friendly.

He has a sibling. She is healthy, happy and full of joy. I suspect she'll have a home by tomorrow.
Two of the baby rabbits we did a Year of The Rabbit photo shoot for. Darling and so well behaved!
Another freebie shot of a gorgeous kitten. On a sad note we pulled a LOVELY sweet Persian from a high kill shelter today. She was riddled with cancer and sores and had to be PTS this afternoon. Poor lady. I'm so glad her last hours were spent in a loving home having her mats groomed and getting scratches and love. My heart aches for Shelly and the cat having to go through that.
Today's beautiful pictures brought to you by the talented Judy Au.

Kala ...

the himi princess has had her surgery (all but 4 teeth had to be removed)
and is doing quite well

she is a dead ringer for Coco - but nice - really really nice - letting me dose her sore mouth with DISGUSTING antirobe (it really does taste awful) - letting Tom and I visit with her - not minding the cats or dogs one little bit...

somewhere I found the name Kala - it means princess in Hawaiian ..

well I like Hawaii
and when we first met Kala her tongue was stuck out (it still is) an irrevant princess suited me fine (himi's kind of look stuck up - their inner persian I guess)
and all are rescues are princesses - at least at our place
and it sounds like Coco enough for a matched set of foster cats
she can only eat wet food - rather princess-like I think

anyhow she's a dear girl with her malformed jaw and sticking out tongue and hardly any teeth ..
her coat needs some work - and brushing but we like her (just all the animals round these parts - sweet or not!

more nando news

Nando is feeling much better today but the news wasn't good. He had an embolism and there is a large blood clot sitting in his aorta waiting to break free and cause another "event". He is, and I quote the much loved Dr Au here, "is a ticking time bomb". Very scary though I'm glad he's feeling better. More sadness in the future it seems - and I don't need a crystal ball for that one.

cats settling in

the fosterlings are settling in well- really well .. TOO WELL - we don't need cats - especially young happy adoptable purebred cats - but nobody is knocking down the door looking for them either ... I hope you can see how blue Lily and Frankie's eyes are ... Coco let me spend quite awhile (in Coco terms anyhow) grooming her today - was a nice bonding moment.

Coco has taken over a new cushion on a new chair. She lives for Temptations Hairball treats - LIVES for them . very funny to watch her make nice just in the hopes you might shake her out a treat!

boy the camera phone is great - it's quick; it's easy and even on dial up I can get the pictures to the blog but I wish they were better pictures.. however - here are Lil (Lily) and Frankie - both have brilliant blue eyes..
